My name is Amanda Rivera, and I am a third-year nursing student at the University of Portland. Growing up, I was taught by my parents that in giving to and helping others, we are cultivating a world that revolves around kindness, empathy, and generosity. They showed me that service is at the core of who we are and how we show love. My nursing journey is shaped by the service opportunities I have been a part of. Ever since I was 6 years old, I have been involved in various community events at my church. St. Rita’s chapter of St. Vincent de Paul has strengthened my desire to become a nurse. Throughout the year, I give out food to the homeless and less fortunate communities. In addition to this, we play a role in restoring the pride and dignity of others. We allow people to be seen for who they are and provide a safe space for them to be heard. In this, I have learned my purpose in life. Serving at St. Rita’s chapter of St. Vincent de Paul has emphasized my calling to help others who are unable to help themselves.

In my journey as a nurse, my vision and goal is to increase access to care through mobilized clinics. I envision implementing these clinics at local food pantries across Portland to provide accessible healthcare services such as providing immunizations and conducting preventative health screenings for diabetes and hypertension to underserved populations such as the houseless and those of lower income. This offers a unique opportunity to serve a diverse, underserved patient population and provide high-quality care to those who would highly benefit. At the end of the day, I believe: “We are made in God’s image, and we all deserve to be treated as such.”
